Customer Spotlight: Veteran-Owned EPIC Septic on a Mission to Do Things Differently

EPIC Septic officially began operations in August 2025. Co-founder Kyle Voss — a former professional football player, U.S. Marine Corps Captain and Riddersen’s brother-in-law — entered the home services space, initially focusing on roofing after his military career and eventually identifying an opportunity in septic service.

The turning point came after a neighbor had a negative experience with a service provider, something that, unfortunately, isn’t uncommon in the industry.

“He just set out on this path to do it better,” Riddersen explained. “And so, the way in which he entered the industry was one of opportunity to do what was right on behalf of his literal neighbor, as well as an opportunity to diversify outside of the roofing industry into something that has zero seasonality.”

From there, EPIC Septic was built with a clear mission: bring professionalism, reliability and modern systems to a field that doesn’t always deliver all three.

Today, the company offers a full range of services, including septic pumping, inspections, repairs, installations and maintenance throughout the Austin area. But their ambitions go far beyond a single market. They recently were approved to pursue a franchise model, enabling them to expand across the country.

“In the world of septic, there is no national brand that exists,” Riddersen said. “The long-term trajectory and ambition is a national septic franchise that has a presence in every major city and certainly every state.”

A Culture Built on Brotherhood and Discipline

Achieving growth goals requires a team aligned around a shared purpose. One of the defining characteristics of EPIC Septic is its focus on hiring and developing veterans. Through its Veterans Initiative, the company actively recruits individuals transitioning from military service into civilian careers. The company currently employs two veterans, and a potential franchisee the company has been in contact with is a former Army Ranger.

Veterans bring qualities that translate directly into septic work: discipline, attention to detail and a commitment to doing things the right way. In an industry where mistakes can lead to environmental issues or costly repairs, that mindset is invaluable.

“In the military, there is a black and white wrong and a black and white right,” Riddersen said. “And doing things the right way every time, adhering to the checklist, adhering to the operations manual, it just becomes baked into their brain.”

Beyond skill and discipline, the company also emphasizes camaraderie. The team dynamic is intentionally built to reflect the brotherhood many veterans experienced during their service.

“What Kyle has experienced and explained to me, he’s like… ‘we become, quite literally, like a band of brothers,’” Riddersen said.
